Module 3 - Overview

Module Description

The goal of this module is to address reading and writing with a visual impairment. The module starts with a review of information regarding the neural processing in reading and the components of reading.  You will learn test procedures, appropriate modifications, scoring and interpretation of various low vision reading and writing assessments.   Detailed instruction is given for treatment interventions including:  visual skills training, reading with magnification, reading without magnification, the importance of illumination, special challenges in reading, and the functional application of handwriting to daily occupations. You will participate in an expert chat session with Dr. Donald Fletcher regarding the evidence-base for evaluation and training in preferred retinal locus (PRL) use for reading.

Course Objectives Addressed in this Module

3. Relate a client’s visual limitation to limitations in occupational performance (Module Objectives a-b)
5. Select appropriate assessment tools based on client needs, contextual factors, and psychometric properties of tests (Module Objectives c-d)
6. Interpret the evaluation data in relation to accepted terminology of the profession and the AOTA Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (Module objectives e-f)
7. Identify and/or devise intervention strategies to enhance occupational performance for individuals with vision impairment (Module objectives g-j)

Module Objectives

On completion of the module you should be able to:

a. Correlate limitations in visual functions to the neural levels of reading.

b. Describe how age related vision conditions influence the reading and writing process.

c.  Select appropriate standardized and non-standardized reading and writing performance assessments.

d. Select appropriate standardized and non-standardized assessments to determine how a macular scotoma interferes with reading.

e. Accurately describe results of standardized and non-standardized reading and writing performance assessments and integrate results into the occupational therapy intervention plan.

f. Accurately describe results of the macular scotoma/PRL assessments and integrate results into the occupational therapy intervention plan.

g. Construct occupation-based, client-centered goals for the activities of reading and writing.

h. Design evidence-based interventions to facilitate occupational performance requiring reading and/or writing.

i. Describe the training sequence of preferred retinal locus use for completion of daily occupations that require reading and/or writing.

j. Describe how to facilitate compensation for persons who do not have usable vision for daily activities that require reading and/or writing.
