COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING

In general students are expected to:

  • Attend all classes, be punctual, and actively participate in class discussions;
  • Study all assigned readings and handouts;
  • Experiment with computer software;
  • Prepare technical reports; and
  • Submit assignments by the due dates.

Each student’s final grade will be based on her/his scores on two tests, a final exam, homework, attendance, and participation.

Examinations (60%)

There will be three exams, including the final exam. Each exam counts for 20% of the final grade. It is important that students make the necessary arrangements to be present and take the exam during the scheduled day and time. To pass this course a student MUST take the final exam AND at least one of the preceding two exams. If for some substantial reason you cannot take an exam at the scheduled time, you should contact me prior to test date, or you will only be eligible for 80% of the total points. Except for the final exam, the instructor may provide a second attempt of an exam, or part thereof, for 80% of the increment in performance.

Homework (25%)

Homework problems will be assigned to students to practice the skills and techniques covered in class. Homework assignments count for 25% of the final grade. If for some substantial reason you cannot turn in your homework at the scheduled time, you should contact me prior to the due date, or you will only be eligible for 80% of the total points.

Attendance & Class Participation (15%)

Students are expected to attend ALL classes, and actively participate in discussions. Attendance and participation count towards 15% of the final grade. Attendance counts for 3.75% and filling out the IDEA Survey counts for 3.75%. After 4 weeks of class, class participation will be assessed based on responsiveness to discussions and questions. Assessment will continue throughout the course and will account for 7.5%.

Grades

Letter grades are awarded following Grading Policies and Practices in the UAB Undergraduate Catalog. The letter grades are:

A (superior achievement, A ≥ 85%)

B (above average, 75% ≤ B < 85%)

C (average, 65% ≤ C < 75%)

D (minimally adequate, 55% ≤ D < 65%)

F (failing, F < 55%)
